Javier Zanetti admitted that Inter had “serious financial problems” and that the Suning owners could have sold the club “mid-season” when the Super League was “a mistake”.

As the Nerazzurri are currently celebrating their first Serie A title in 11 years, the problems remain and sporting director Zanetti explained them to Argentinian newspaper La Nacion.

“Above all, Conte brought a work ethic and mentality. He convinced even the youngest players that his project could really work. Since the day he arrived, not a day has gone by without his thinking about how to improve this team. He convinced the club to follow him.

“There was some skepticism at the start about his past at Juventus, but they’ve grown to love him. He has been focused since day one and accepted this challenge like a true Interista.

Zanetti admits how much Inter struggled and could have seen Suning bail out.

“It is true that the club could have been sold mid-season. We were going through serious financial problems, although we were not the only ones in such a difficult time.

“I saw that as a club we can still improve. The coach has done something amazing in two years, now it’s up to us to improve the internal mechanism and aspire to something more.

“Financial problems persist and it could take a few years to regain that balance. We need people back in the stadium to make the sponsors happy. In short, a return to normality.

“We must not hide, it’s a delicate moment, but we want to take it one step further. What we need is an ambitious strategy that guarantees long-term sustainability. “

It was also because of these financial problems that Inter were one of three Italian clubs – along with Juventus and Milan – to register for the European Super League.

“The idea didn’t last long and the fans gave their response,” Zanetti added. “I’m not even talking about just the 12 founding clubs, but fans of all football.

“It was a mistake and we have to learn from our mistakes. It was a mistake, no doubt, but it will certainly help FIFA, UEFA and the main football bodies to get closer to the clubs and find other ways to improve the football world.
