JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has said it is concerned about reports of overspending at Tembisa Hospital over the past fiscal year.

The hospital is said to have exceeded its budget by more than 700 million rand, which affected this year’s budget.

The party met with interim CEO Mohlamme Mathabathe on Wednesday, where the hospital was called to account for allegations of corruption.

Reports suggest the hospital purchased overpriced equipment, including 230 washcloths, 100 leather chairs and 200 skinny jeans.

“They’ve overshot by R747m so it’s clear something is wrong with this hospital. The CEO has now been suspended and is moving on, I hope the interim CEO and his team get on with it. will ensure that any future money will be properly spent on goods for patients that they actually need,” said Jack Bloom of the DA.
