Inter Milan’s financial woes are a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, and the owners were set to sell the club mid-season.

Inter Milan vice-president and former captain Javier Zanetti confirmed the club’s concerns in a revealing interview with La Nacion, as quoted by LIKE. Zanetti has said rumors surrounding the club’s potential mid-season sale are true as the club continue to face financial woes from the pandemic. The Argentinian said: “The financial problems persist and it could take a few years to regain that balance. We need people back in the stadium to make the sponsors happy. Basically, a return to normalcy.”

Inter Milan have been hit extremely hard during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the owners, Suning, have been forced to shut down operations of their Chinese football clubs due to financial risks. The Nerazzurri reiterated Suning’s financial commitment to the club in a statement meant to reassure fans and bring more finances and resources to the club. Zanetti meanwhile praised Antonio Conte for the club’s success, suggesting he had done an extraordinary job on the pitch during his two years with Inter. The vice president added that at times like these, the organization needs to improve the internal mechanism and aspire to something more. Zanetti added that the club need a far-reaching strategy that ensures long-term sustainability in what is a “delicate moment”.

The club’s financial woes meant that Inter Milan owner and president Steven Zhang initially joined AC Milan and Juventus to join the European Super League. The project secured European qualification and JP Morgan-funded membership fees, which could have been a much-needed boost to Inter’s finances. However, following a huge backlash, the club withdrew from the project. With fans far from returning to the stadium, Inter Milan’s financial woes only get worse and they could take advantage of some of their biggest stars. Romelu Lukaku has constantly been linked with a return to the Premier League, while Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella and Milan Å kriniar could also demand a lot of money in the market.
