It doesn’t add up, Leicester have no financial problems but too many players in a full squad – TCF – FILBERT WAY

Gary Lineker is one of many who hasn’t counted a player at Leicester. He is on the side of people who doubt the power of owners and their willingness to invest and believe that business is not business as usual.

The picture is a bit more complicated because the 25 limit will be a problem for the club because too many players are at the club currently and using £50m last summer without selling any players you understand the barn is full.

The club’s last big sale was Ben Chilwell two seasons ago. The business model is based on this phenomenon that you have to sell a big asset to get a new one, but as long as you have that many players at the club right now, you can’t squeeze new faces.

Leicester will not be able to use £100m every summer and will not sell any players, which has not been possible in the past and will not be a situation in the future.

Brendan Rodgers is to blame for this as he packed the squad last season with 27 professional players in his first team. What happened to Nampalys Mendy must not be repeated as the Senegal international was kicked out of the Premier League in the first part of the season which made it impossible to buy new players as more faces had to be left out with big salaries.

This is of course something that potential new players are aware of, as being kicked out of the 25 is a massacre for a player and having a new employer you cannot trust and being kicked out of A possible chance to play in the Premier League might not be the idea you have when you decide to sign on the dotted line.

We’ve seen a number of players being shipped out on loan or released, but surprisingly the only move involving money is Kasper Schmeichel leaving for £1m.

Leicester need to balance their books without help from owners who may be thinner at this stage but still a surprise to hear as the new training ground and plans for King Power Stadium and the surrounding area move forward, so we do I don’t believe this would have happened if the club had been in financial trouble.

Leicester need to ship players and when the Tielemans and Fofanas are not keen to stay unlike the club who want to tie players down long term with lucrative deals, you understand that a problematic financial situation would not allow such a policy.

To be able to invest in the squad, you first need space to bring them in and not see former great signings rot on the training ground and left out of the Premier League squad. This work is far from done as we hope Soumare, Tielemans and Fofana will leave and free up some money to use, but there are still too many very expensive good players on the sidelines.

At present this count includes 29 players, Luke Thomas is not a player counted among the 25, since he is 21 years old. This gives a count of 28 players.

George Hirst and Callum Wright have U.21 opportunities so far, but both have played regular football for the past two seasons at either League One or Championship level and are not at all happy to be left out first team business.

To be able to sign a player you need to get more players out because they would go on the grass with no Premier League games to play. This is the problem for Leicester as no club is willing or able to pay what Leicester is paying at the moment. Loan moves won’t free up money and only free transfer signings can be made, and just shipping players off and paying £50m or more for a few new ones has never been a scenario in this club not in the past and is not going to happen in the future.
